TESTS BY FRANCE

U Thant’s “Distress” (N.Z JP. A.-Reuter—Copyright) BELGRADE, May 11. The United Nations Secre-tary-General (U Thant) yesterday expressed "utter distress” at reports that France plans to conduct hydrogen bomb tests soon in the Pacific. In an interview published in Belgrade as he left for Rome after a two-day visit he said: “I would appeal to the Government of France with all the emphasis at my command to reconsider its decision.” In an interview, with the official Jugoslav news agency, Tanjug, he said that besides poisoning the atmosphere the tests might also greatly effect the current negotiations on banning nuclear tests. “The negotiations are likely to be long drawn out, but we must not lose hope,” be said.
