Match With E. Germany (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Comrtght) EAST BERLIN, May 13. The highlight of yesterday’s events in the Australia-East Germany swimming match was the victory of 18-year-old R. Windle, of Australia, in the 1500 metres freestyle. Nearly 2000 spectators cheered him from the water after the race. He had gone into an early lead which he maintained throughout, finishing strongly about 25 yards ahead of a team-mate, R. Phegan. His time was 17min 44.45ec. The 14-strong Australian swimming team won their two-day match against East Germany by 81 points to 61. The Australians won nine of the 12 events. The Australian team won the 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay. The team —D. Dickson, Windle, A. Strahan and RLing, won in 3min 45.55ec with the East Germans— Frank Wiegand, Guenter Hoehne, Peter Sommer and Martin Klink—l.9sec behind. The Australian team manager, Mr W. Holland, said after the match: "We are satisfied with the result, but it could have been better.” Mr Holland said the East German swimmers had “quite a lot of work to do to catch up with other nations.” An East German team official said: “The Australians have proved their swimming superiority during the match. We are very glad they came here to compete with our swimmers because we have been able to learn much from them.” The Australians fly to Copenhagen today to compete against a Danish team.
