Immigration Record

(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) CANBERRA. May 12. Seven thousand and forty assisted immigrants from Britain, a post-war record, will leave by sea and air for Australia this month. The previous monthly record was 6600 in April. 1949. The Australain Minister for Immigration, Mr Alex Denver, said that when the rate of applications in Britain began to rise sharply during the latter half of 1962, the Australian Government provided an additional £1 million for assisted passages.

“Action was then taken to obtain every available shipping berth to Australia for assisted British migrants and also to encourage the interest of migrants in travelling by air,” he said.
