Big Labour Gains

(N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, May 12. Labour Party leaders today claimed sweeping successes over the Conservative Party in k :al administration elections last week. The Labour Party’s genera.! secretary. Mr Lea Williams, claimed a net gain of 878 seats—263 more than the party lost in 1960 at the last polls. The Labour Partyclaimed it had won control of 61 councils in the week’s elections The elections in most cases were for one-third of the seats in each of the councils, which are totally reconstituted on a three-year cycle. There were 8400 vacant seats, but about 3010 candidates were returned unopposed. The Liberal Party leader. Mr Jo Grimmond. said his party had made steady advances. There were now 1841 Liberal councillors, compared with 475 in 1959
