Pope Awarded Peace Prize (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) VATICAN CITY, May 11. The Balzan Peace Prize —a gold medallion and chain—was yesterday presented to the Pope by Italian President Segni. The award includes 1 million Swiss francs which is expected to go to charity. The 81-year-old Pope was smiling and relaxed when the ceremony started in the Vatican throne room; but he was grave and a little drawn when it ended one hour and three-quarters later with the solemn Benediction in St. Peter’s Basilica. The citation to the award was presented to Pope John after the procession to St. Peter’s by the former Italian President, Giovanni Gronchi, chairman of the Balzan Peace Committee. Pope John was awarded the peace prize for his efforts to reconcile nations and faiths of the world in a brotherhood of peace. Among outstanding events of his reign have been repeated messages appealing for peace, the ecumenical council last autumn, and his encyclical “Pacem in Terris” last month.
