TROTTING Doctor Dan And Our Own Win Oamaru Events

Wins by Doctor Dan in the Centennial Pace and Own Own in the Centennial Trot completed a notable day for their partowner and trainer-driver, D. G. Jones, at Oamaru on Saturday. The two races were feature events at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s North Otago centennial meeting.

Doctor Dan forced most of the pace in the Centennial Pace and he had no trouble in outsprinting his rivals over the final furlong. This win, his fifth for the season, graduated him to a 4min 24sec mark for two miles.

Raced in partnership by Jones and Mr W. McDonald, of Edendale, Doctor Dan is a four-year-old gelding by Fallacy from Sister Shona. He should have little difficulty taking the final step to New Zealand Cup company in the spring. Fox Able, after trailing Doctor Dan for most of the race, held on for second, with Robin Dundee making ground for third. This race was the first leg of the T.A.B. double and it drew a most even field. This was emphasised in the betting when the favourite on the win totalisator, Junior Royal, was paying between £7 and £B. Doctor Dan was the 6/7 favourite and paid £ll 15s 6d. Piper’s win in the R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap, the second leg of this double, was well received. He is raced by the president of the Oamaru club, Mr W. B. McCone, for whom he is trained by E. C. Forsythe at Waimate. He was driven on Saturday by D. J. Townley, who had him well placed throughout. Blonde Piper ran on boldly to beat Monapat by a head. The Doctor Dan—Blonde Piper double paid £377 3s for £l. Our Own. which Jones races in partnership with Mr W. A. Craddock, of Westport, showed a splendid return to top form in the Centennial Trot. She started from 48 yards and put in a tremendous run wide out in the straight to win handily by half a length. She took 3min 32 4-ssec for the 13 furlongs, compared with 3min 35 1-5 sec by Doctor Dan. The on-course double, was won by Aero Scott and Peerswick, this combination returning £6B 4s fid for £l. The meeting was held in fine, cool weather before a large crowd. The track was fast. Totalisator investments oncourse amounted to £40,817 10s, including £5926 10s on the doubles, compared with £30.677 15s last year.

First Leg Flying Note, Highland Custom. Robin Dundee, Massacre. Peel. Morano Boy, Jay Ar. Junior Royal and Stormlight gave ground in the first furlong of the Centennial Pace, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Fox Able led out from Rustic Lad, Doctor Dan, which sprinted up smartly three wide. Van Rebeck and Southern Cross. Doctor Dan went to the front before the end of three furlongs and he set a fairly easy pace. Robin Dundee and others improved near the six furlongs, with Robin Dundee working into second place on the outside of the leader. Robin Dundee drifted in the back straight and Doctor Dan led by a length and a half from Fox Able racing to the straight, with Southern Cross. Peel. Avante and Lauder Scott handy and Robin Dundee showing up. Doctor Dan did not look like being tested and he won easily by a length from Fox Able'. Robin Dundee made ground for third a short length back, with a length and a quarter to Avante. and a length and a half to Rustic Lad and Peel. Flying Note, Van Rebeck. Southern Cross. Jay Ar, Massacre. Lauder Scott and Junior Royal were next.

The Trotters Tarseal, which was pulled up. Robert Medoro and Hindu broke in the first three furlongs of the Centennial Trot. Frogman made the early pace, but a*t the end of half a mile Queen’s Cord took over. Queen’s Cord set a sound pace past the mile post from Frogman, Astralight. Kyran. Free Return, Tracey’s Pal, Oakleigh Lad, Rebel. Flaming Way and Front Line, with Our Own on the rails three places further back. Robert Medoro and Kyran broke before the two furlongs and Queen's Cord and Free Return led for home together. They were followed by Astralight, Oakleigh Lad. Tracey’s Pal and Rebel, with Our Own making ground wide out further back. In a great struggle over the last furlong, Our Own responded best to win by hail a length from Rebel, with a nose to Flaming Way, a head to Free Return and a neck to Spinster Scott. Oakleigh Lad and Queen’s Cord were right up. ahead of Frogman and i Astralight. - Blonde Piper Blonde Piper and Monapat fought out a keen finish to the R- A. McDowell Memorial Handicap, with Blonde Piper winning narrowly. Rothesay took the lead with 9$ fur-

longs to run, Central Range shading him inside the last half-mile, only to break before the three furlongs. Monapat worked clear racing to the straight, with Blonde Piper, Rothesay, Cheta, Ruling Caste, Fury River, Manneqnin Parade and Stanorma showing up. Monaipat and Blonde Piper drew out, with Cheta joining them and Fury River blocked for an opening behind them. Blonde Piper did best to beat Monapat by a head, with half a length back to Cheta, and slightly more than a length to Fury River. Then came Stanorma, Miriam Hall, Mannequin Parade, No Charge and Rothesay. Monapat, Dominica, Generator, Otikirama Boy, Rothesay, Bay Prince and Roseland Song gave ground at the start.
