GOLF Templeton Retains Lead In Woodward Cup

With one round to be played to complete the 1963 Woodward Cup inter-dub golf competition, Templeton has a narrow lead over Russley A. Waitikiri and Christchurch A are together in third place. In the fifth and six rounds played yesterday at Russley, Templeton retained its half-point lead with a good win over Waitikiri in the morning, and another convincing performance to beat Kaiapoi.

Points are: Templeton SJ, Russley A 5. Waitikiri and Christchurch A 4, Kaiapoi and Russley B 2, Christchurch B 1. Avondale J. In the final series at Rangiora on June 9, Templeton will play Christchurch A and Russley A will meet Waitikiri. Templeton was not troubled to maintain its very good record against Waitikiri. R. E. Clements at No. 2 and the new Freyberg Rosebowl player, A. C. Browne, formed a strong leading pair, but Browne was in rattier better form than Clements on the day. Clements met B. L. Ciegg and in a match of indifferent standard won on the last green after being three up with four to play. At the preceding seven holes Ciegg failed to score a single bogey, although his best d ive of the match had given him a fine birdie at the long th irteenth, and it seemed that Ciements would score a comfi rtable victory. But Clegg von the short fifteenth, scored a birdie well organised by way of the seventeenth fairway at the next and when Clements visited a green-side bunker they were all square. Two long drives finished in the trees on either side of the last fairway but Clements chipped I from 30 yards and sank his putt for a par and a win. ! After lunch Clements beat H J. Gossett, but Clegg, m| spite of his morning recovery, had a shocking time and lost 7 and 6 to I. J. Campbell. Almost every drive finished in trees, he could do nothing right in his attempted lecoveries, and at one stage lost seven consecutive holes to five bogeys and two birdies, to an opponent who remained the essence of sieadiness throughout. In addition to Clements and Browne, R. C. Murray. K. D. Foxton and C. W. Caldwell of the team to defend the Rosebowl were having their last competitive n arches before travelling north. Murray was in fine form in providing the finest golf of the day. and Foxton also had two wins. Although recovering from a severe cold and never really extended, he was by no means es sound as usual. Caldwell was a little disanpointine although at times he gave notice that with concentrated practice he may rapidly regain his best. After a struggle to dispose of F. W. Roberts, he was unable to cope with Murray His long game was unusuallv loose and the smooth controlled irons that have always been a fetature of his play, were lacking. Murray was two under scratch when his morning game ended and he had not only

found the greens with many firm long irons, but had putted much more competently than for most of this season. Against Caldwell he was out in 36 to be two up and one under, having scored three brilliant birdies at each of the long holes. Glorious drives and three woods from the fairways left him an eagle putt at each, and he was only inches away from the cup at the ninth. Unfortunately Murray had marred his outward run by lapsing again on the greens where he missed a very short one at the seventh and like Caldwell, badly three-putted the next. He sank a long one at the eleventh to be three up. only to chip badly, and again three-putt at the long thirteenth, but the match ended dismally two holes later. Caldwell was in a bunker from the tee. and he exploded out over the green and down the bank and then chipped back far too strongly. J. G. Scott, a very competent match-player, had five birdies in his match with D. J. Gaudin (Avondale), but Gaudin. confident and extremely steady as usual, finally prevailed at the last. N. Mabey (Templeton) featured in quite the recovery of the day. Playing J. Monk (Kaiapoi). Mabey was five down with seven to play, before winning with next five with bogey to be square, and then holing a putt of 20 feet at the last for a birdie. G V. Stokes was one under when his match with D. Cummick ended, and R. H. Bradley, another youngster of promise, was always near scratch for two fine wins by five and four.
