CAR STRUCK BY TRAIN

Blighs Road Accident The front of a car was wrecked when it was struck by a steam locomotive on the Blighs road crossing, Papanui, at 2.45 p.m. on Saturday. The driver, William Thomas Chinn, of 849 Main North road, suffered chest and head injuries. He was taken by St John ambulance to the Christchurch Hospital and was later transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital. His condition was reported last evening as quite comfortable. The train was travelling north and the car West. The force of the impact flung the car seven yards back from the crossing. The train was driven by Mr Andrew Desmond Erickson, of 37 Merryhill road, Hornby. A can of petrol in the boot of the car caught fire and a unit from the St. Albans station was called out.
