NO TEACHING IN RELIGION

Responsibility Declined (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 12. Religious instruction will not be allowed at the Glen Innes Primary School. The newly-elected committee at its first meeting unanimously endorsed the former committee’s action. Under th.e Nelson system, nondenominational religious instruction was the accepted rule, said the chairman Mr C. E. Smith, in a statement. Under the new act any religious instructor of any religious organisation could apply to the school committee for permission to teach. If the committee granted one sect permission to teach, it morally could not refuse any other religion under the circumstances, said Mr Smith. The committee was not prepared to accept the responsibility of deciding which religions would be taught at the school.
