U.S. POLARIS SUBMARINES
Base Planned In Guam . (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 12. Polaris submarines will be in the Pacific in two years. Admiral J. H. Sides, commander in chief of the United States Pacific fleet, said at Whenuapai on Saturday night. New Zealand would see little of them as they would be based in Guam, he added. Admiral Sides arrived in New Zealand with his wife on Saturday on a courtesy visit marking the 21st anniversary of the battle of the Coral Sea. Admiral Sides said the United States already had regular submarines carrying missiles in the Pacific. Admiral Sides said New Zealand should put considerable emphasis on anti-sub-marine warfare. This meant more than frigates. It meant long-range patrol planes, anti-submarine aircraft and helicopters as well as thfe surface ships.
Admiral Sides, who has been connected with the development of missiles for 15 years, said the United States was in the process of equipping all the forces that could take them with antiaircraft missiles. “Air missiles are very necessary.” he said. “Guns are not much good against the high performance planes of today. “In my view the number of potential aircraft kills by one guided-missile destroyer of the C. F. Adams class greatly exceeds all the potential kills in an entire task force in the last war ”
