Speedboats' Speed
QPEEDBOAT drivers of the M New Brighton Power Boat Club have broken a dozen records this season but the maximum speed of 75 miles an hour still eludes them—by a very narrow margin The fastest boat in the club is Vamoose (G. Calder), an inboard hydro, powered by a Cortina engine with Lotus conversion. Vamoose has been officially timed at 745 m.p.h. over a kilometre. Last Saturday Calder was the most disappointed driver in the club when he could not get the motor to start for the time trial runs on the Estuary. He considers Vamoose will do 80 m.p.h.
Moonshot (J. Kelg), an outboard hydro, powered with a C class Konig motor, is the second-fastest boat at 73 102 mph—an Australian and New Zealand record speed for the class. Right on his stern is Downbeat (R. Prattley) with a speed of 72.82 mp.h, achieved in the time trials last Saturday. The race to be the first to break 75 m.ph. is a close one, and. given the right conditions, any one of these three speedboats could win and get the cup offered for this feat. Also in the hunt is Bel Air H (P Knight) with a timed top-speed to date of 73.582 m ph.
