Rider Placed Twice In One Race

(New Zealand Press Association)

MASTERTON, May 9

The Masterton cross-coun-try jockey, G. Jenkins, yesterday achieved a rare feat —he rode the official third and fourth placegetters in the hurdle race at Levin It is believed that such a riding performance was recorded once many years ago. but that 30-year-old Jenkins is the first to have produced such a rarity in modern times.

Jenkins piloted King’s Mate into third place in the Tarua Hack Hurdle* yesterday.

Later he mounted Brave Warrior and took fourth place. Scratchings had reduced the field ot 13 to six starters Misguided, which was clear in the early part, lost her rider, D. J. Rich, at the first fence in the straight the first time. By then King’s Mate was tailing off.

Brave Sailor lost his rider. E. C. Andrew, at the six furlongs. leaving Summerford. Kindling and Shah Jahan apparently the only ones with chances. King’s Mate still being tailed off. Summerford crashed heav-

ily at the last fence when sharing the lead, but beaten. Kindling therefore ran out the winner by 20 lengths from Shah Jahan, with King’? Mate crossing the last fence when the other two were pulling up. and getting third 200 yards back. Summerford was caught and R. A. Jenkins took him back to the last fence, turned and was placed fourth. Jenkins, however, could not make the weight carried by the original rider, P. Mohi. so the horse lost the placing. Next, G. Jenkins, who had ridden King’s Mate and weighed in, mounted Brave Sailor, took him back to the six furlongs and completed the course.

By this time, however, the fences had been removed, but Jenkins was placed and weighed in. The judicial stewards reported that the £l5 for fourth would be awarded to Brave Sailor's owner and added that they were of the opinion that the requirements of rule 291 (d) were complied with.
