Opening At Panmure
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 10. The new £30.000 Panmure Young Citizens’ Centre, which t. expected to cater for the physical and cultural activities of more than 2000 young people, will be opened tomorrow afternoon by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Sir Leon Gotz).
The large building is set in spacious grounds and has wide views of the Tamaki. Most of the finance for the building was raised by work organised by the Panmure Young Citizens’ Centre Trust Board, assisted greatly by
the Panmure Rotary Club. The chairman of the trust board, Mr L. J. Fisher, said today that a grant of £4OOO was 'made by the Government and £3OOO was given by the Mt. Wellington Borough Council. The Mayor of Howick (Mr A. Stevens) donated £lOOO. and Mr S. J. Robinson, of Epsom, gave £5OO. A garden party raised £7OQ, and a mystery envelope campaign raised £ll.OOO. »
Mr Fisher said firms supplying materials for the centre had been most generous with discounts, which amounted to about £5OOO. ‘‘The aims of the centre aire to develop the physical, cultural and social activities of the district’s youth,” said Mr Fisher. “It will provide activities to fill time which otherwise could be idle Youth of all districts should have centres like this one.” He said the membership of the centre was ailready 1460. and was increasing by dozens each week.
