SYDNEY, May 10 A 63-year-old man was found floating on a mattress near the ceiling of his home at Sooth Grafton last night, daring one of the worst snap floods In the history of north New Sooth Wales.

Barely able to move from cold, he had clung to the wall for half the night until two friends dragged him through a window at daybreak

Grafton's main street was awash and there was 10ft of water in many shops. Shop windows caved in under the force of the water which swept in and out of stores, carrying away goods

which bobbed and weaved as the street became part of the river.

Hundreds of people art homeless and many volunteer rescuers have been without sleep for 24 hours. Some parts of the main street of Kempeey, another town, were covered with water 14ft deep and many homes and shops were under water.

More than 2000 people to several towns are reported to have been forced out of their homes by the floods. The Pacific coast highway has been blocked in about a dozen places near Kempaey. Grafton and Bailins; and the North Coast railway line has been dosed by a washsway at Kempaey.
