More Attempts On Summit

James W Whittaker, of Redmond Washington was the first American to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 1, it was announced in a radio message from the expedition’s base camp, received in New Delhi Earlier radio messages said hittaker and Sherpa Gombu spent half an hour on the summit but found no traces of previous successful climbs
Snow fell as they made their descent in a temperature of 30deg below zero
Whittaker who is 32. ts equipment officer of the expedition He is Mount Rainier National Park mountain guide and has been climbing since he was a Boy Scout in 1943 The leader of the expedition Mr Norman Dyrenfur'h with Sherpa Ang Dawa reached a height of 28.100 feet in immediate support of Whittaker
The Americans have planned three further attempts on the 29.141-foot Summit—two by the unclimbed Medim ridge and one by the traditional South col route
