SUGAR DUST BLAST

Roof Torn Off; 13 Hurt (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MONTREAL, May 7. An explosion ripped through a sugar refining plant yesterday, injuring 13 persons and filling a blocklong street with rubble, the Canadian Press reported. A fire department offioiaJ said it was a miracle no-one was killed. None of the injured was reported in a serious condition.

The explosion occurred in the upper levels of the packaging plant of St. Lawrence Sugar Refineries, Ltd. It tore off the roof of the building and ripped gaping holes in three walls. The explosion touched off a series of fires inside the building and sent huge clouds of black smoke billowing over the city. An accumulation of sugar dust apparently caused the explosion.
