I N.Z .P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

CAMBRIDGE, May 9. The West Indian fast bowler, W.» Hall, hammered the Cambridge University bowlers to score his first century in 65 minutes on the first day of their three-day match yesterday. Hall helped the West Indians pile up the formidable total of 512. In reply, the University lost one wicket for six runs at the close. On a pitch that gave the bowlers little help, Hall's flashing bat produced an unbeaten 102, which included 15 4's. After a slow but sound start before lunch. the afternoon produced a fine display o f

aggressive batting by the West Indians. C. Hunte played a valuable opening innings of 96. He and R. Kanhai put on 120 runs for the second wicket when Hunte was leg before. Kanhai went on to score a

faultless 119, including twenty 4’s in two hours and a quarter. With B. Butcher he added 85 in 50 minutes. Sixty-three runs came from the fifth wicket partnership between Butcher and Rodriguez before Butcher provided the wicket-keeper, M. Brearley, with his third catch. Hall came in later to punish the bowling with his terrific drives. The last wicket stand of 61 took 25 minutes, thus bringing the West Indian scoring rate over the innings to 85 runs an hour. In reply, the University batsmen struggled in the poor light and lost Brearley in three overs.
