THE ACADEMIC HOODS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY were worn for the first time at yesterday’s graduation ceremony. In this photograph, from left, are Mr D. A. R. Happer, Ph.D. in chemistry; Mr D. W. Mackay, B.E. (second-class honours in electrical engineering); Mrs P. S. Madison, B.A.; and Mr S. F. Mitchell, B.Sc. (second-class honours). The hoods for bachelors’ and masters’ degrees are of a colour known as Canterbury grey with full satin linings of faculty colour. A bachelor with honours has a one-inch border of the lining on the exterior of the hood; a master has a three-inch border and the neckband faced with the same material as the lining. The hood for a doctor of philosophy is of the same material and colour as the facings of the gown (maroon) and is lined with Canterbury grey.
