University Of Canterbury Holds First Graduation Ceremony

The degrees of the University of Canterbury, which were being presented for the first time, would be accepted and highly regarded throughout the world, the Chancellor, Mr C. H. Perkins, told graduands and guests at the graduation ceremony in King Edward Barracks yesterday.

During the procession to the barracks and the ceremony people remarked approvingly on the new grey hoods of the university, which have replaced the plain black hoods of the University of New Zealand.

Mr Perkins congratulated the graduands on their academic achievement, and wished those leaving the university every success in the future.

‘•The community expects more from you because of your qualifications, and you must not disappoint them." he said.

The Chancellor thanked the rmy authorities for the use of the barracks. The graduation ceremony now required too much space to be held in any other city building, and without the Army’s co-oper-ation a successful ceremony would be difficult to arrange, he said.
