BESIEGING OF QUEEN

Greek Govt. Blamed

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) ATHENS, May 7. Rumours that the Greek Royal visit to Britain on July fl would be cancelled were "fictitious and without any basis.” the Government announced last night. The announcement said the State visit by King Paul and Queen Frederika would go ahead as scheduled, the Associated Press reported. Rumours have been circulating that the visit will be postponed after incidents against Queen Frederika during her London visit for Princess Alexandra's wedding. The Queen was besieged by Greek nationals demanding release of what they called Greek political prisoners. In Parliament last night, the leader of the major Greek opposition party, Mr George Papandreou. said the Greek Government had “mishandled” Queen Frederika’s visit. He was opening a five-day debate on a double motion of censure against the Government of the Prime Minister. Mr Constantine Karamanlis.

If it was true, Mr Papandreou said, that the Government bpd advised the Queen against the trip, it should have resigned when the Queen carried on. “The Government attributed the London incident to international communism but this is not correct . . he said. Mr Papandoreou said there were prisoners in Greece who could be called political prisoners because the Minister for Home Affairs was empowered to release them on his decision. He said these prisoners numbered about 1000. Replying to Mr Papandreou, the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Panayotis Kanellopoulos). said the Government had no reason to advise Queen Frederika not to go to London. Referring to the remarks about Greek political prisoners, Mr Kanellopoulos said the opposition party leader made a “national mistake” by saying they existed. They were “all criminals” convicted for crimes after the Communist insurrection was crushed in 1948.
