It was a magnificent > long hit, but when at full ' height the ball swung [ sharply away and des- ; cended on the Main North i road; or not quite on it,
as it was intercepted by a small car travelling south. The golfer, all embarrassment, looked for some long grass to hide in. But the motorist was most co-operative, instead of exhibiting the expected symptoms of rage. He stopped, took the ball from his radiator grille, placed it on a concrete fence pest, gave the player a cheery wave, and departed. The golfer, no doubt in conflict with the rules of the game, took out a 7-iron and executed a skilful shot almost to the green from the top of the post.
