MANY CHANGES IN BADMINTON TEAMS

■piVE teams are entered in the Canterbury Badminton Association’s A grade inter-club competition, compared with six last year. Selwyn, which for the last two seasons has entered two teams of even strength, ha? this year only one team entered. The first round will begin on May 13.

Several leading players have changed clubs or are not playing this season. Knox has two serious losses, with D. Henderson, Canterbury’s top man for the last two seasons away overseas, and Mrs S. Dean, the Canterbury women’s champion and former national mixed doubles title-holder, transferred to the Christchurch club.

Miss J. Davidson, who was overseas for most of last season is again playing for Avonside, although B. Wylie, third in the division one team last season, nas transferred back to nis old club, Christchurch. Railway will be without D. Forbes, a division one player for the last two seasons. who will probably not be playing badminton this year. Selwyn has lost Mrs A. Ryan who is not playing this season, and Mrs J. Louw, who has returned to her home in South Africa, but has gained Miss B. Gormack. a Southland representative for several years. Last year’s competition winner, Christchurch, has a strong team and must have every chance of retaining its title. D. Reid, R. Macefield, B. Wylie, all of whom have represented Canterbury, and the improving young player T Bradbury form a formidsble team. The women, Mrs Dean, Misses M. Wilson, E. R eastern and N. Baty, have all played in division one or two teams. The Canterbury champion. P. Boatwood, will lead

Avonside and will be well supported by S. Clarke. E. Ogier, D. Atkinson, Miss J. Davidson. Mesdames M. Brown, P. Boatwood, and Miss A. Hughes. Selwyn, with only one team entered, has several piayera trying for A grade honours. R. Halil, J. McShane, J. Read. W. Fox, B. Fowler, J. Wilson, K. Hawkins and R. Burrell all have a chance. The women will be a well balanced side chosen from Mesdames D. Creasey, W. Fowler, Misses R. White, K. Williams and B. Gormack. Railway will miss its top player, D. Forbes, but still has M. Ford, runner-up in

the Canterbury championship last year, R. Miller, a promising junior, B. Dunn and R. Kirton. Mrs M. Miller, a division one player, will again lead the women and will be supported by Misses E. Cihandler, P. Thomson and Mrs P. Duckmanton. Knox has lost Henderson and Mrs Dean and will be lead by B. Crofts. C. Snook, E Harrington and P. Small make up the team and R. G. Pattinson will play if required. The women will be chosen from Mesdames P. Davidson, M. Jeffreys, Misses E. Stevenson, B. Makinson, M. Gardner and C. Gardner.
