No Motoring Offences In Current Session

It was pleasing to note that there were no charges of negligent driving causing death among the 14 criminal cases to be heard in the current session of the Supreme Court, said Mr Justice Macartb" - at the opening of the session yesterday. His Honour also expressed pleasure at there being only two indictments alleging sekual crimes. The criminal session was expected to last from three to four weeks, with some civil jury trials in tbe fourth and two following weeks, said his Honour. Twenty-four civil jury cases were set down for this session. Also set down for hearing were 23 actions for trial by a judge alone, 36 originating summonses. 24 defended divorces, eight appeals against decisions of the Magistrate’s Court, 30 miscellaneous applications, and a number of other matters, said his Honour. Two judges would sit until June 25, then one of them would be on the . Nelson, Blenheim, and Greymouth circuits. His Honour said that work in the Supreme Cpurt in Christ'hutch was more up-to-date than it had been for some time. This was because of the visit in the last two weeks of the Chief Justice and three other judges from Wellington. His Honour passed on the appreciation of the Chief Jus-

tice and the other visiting and resident judges of the work of the Supreme Court Registrar and his staff, the police, and solicitors and counsel in the last two weeks. Of the 86 cases set down for those civil sittings, 83 were disposed of by hearing, settlement or some other, final order, his Honour’said.
