NEW RAILWAY BRIDGE

First Official Train The first official train oyer the new Kowai railway bridge, near Springfield, on Monday was the railcar to the West Coast. The bridge, which has been under construction for about a year, replaces a wrought-iron on cast iron cylinder piles structure more than 60 years old. The new bridge, 35 feet downstream from the old one, is 872 feet long. There are Six 80 feet spans, two 66 feet spans and one 60 fee: span. The structure is of concrete and steel, and the rails are 66 feet above the level of the river bed. Each of the main piers is supported on eight octagonal piles driven 30 feet into the riverbed. At present there is a speed restriction on trains using the bridge as the approaches have not yet been consolidated, but work is expected to be completed soon.
