Climbers Object To Place Names

Disapproval at the personal names assigned to Antarctic features has been expressed by the executive of the Federated Mountain Clubs, according to the latest issue of the Federation's bulletin. In several instances of prominent features the persons after whom they have been named had not contributed to field work in exploring the Antarctic, said the bulletin. Antarctic place names should be regarded as provisional until they had been published and objections heard, the executive said. Although it was appreciated by the executive that several other countries were involved in naming Antarctic places it was suggested to the secretary of the New Zealand Geographical Board that a procedure be established for Antarctic place names similar to that operating in New Zealand.
