ADDINGTON MARKET Fewer Fat Stock Yarded; Prices Mainly Steady Or Better

Fat lamb values were generally about 2s a head dearer at the Addington market yesterday. This movement came after the rise in the schedule at the beginning of the week. The quality of the lambs entered was good, although very few big, heavy lambs were forward. In the fat sheep sale wethers sold about on a par with last week, but the ewe market showed a definite firming of about 3s a head. In the fat cattle pens steers and heifers tended to be from par to slightly firmer, but cows, which were fairly plentiful, were inclined to be cheaper. The entry, though smaller than last week, included a good many cattle which were not suitable for the trade.

FAT LAMBS The fat lamb entry was considerably smaller than last week and totalled 3168 head cornpared with 4475 hut it was still a sizeable offering. Quality was generally good with a big proportion of prime quality medium weights and very few small and plain sorts but there were not as many big heavy lambs. The market opened on a sound note with values for all classes dearer, by fully 2s a head on woolly lambs and slightly more on the best of the shorn lambs. This level was continued until the closing stages when demand fell away and most of the opening gain was lost. The improved market reflected the increase in the export schedule this week and there was again some good competition from wholesale and freezing interests.. Best heavy woolly lambs sold from 58s Id to 66s Id, with prime medium lambs at 50s Id to 57s Id and light at 41s Id to 49s Id. Quality was generally quite good, although there was again a fairly big proportion of plainer types included. The wether market was generally about on a par with last week, but buying tended to be a little selective and bidding, except on the best quality was not as free as last week. Good quality young wethers were fully firm on late rates, but some of the plainer sorts could have been a fraction easier at times. Butchers’ ewes sold soundly in a free sale and values generally advanced by fully 3s a head. There was a very good demand which reflected the relatively smaller offering of ewes and there was useful competition from wholesale buyers The young wether market was topped by A. J. FAT CATTLE The fat cattle entry was down from 565 head last week to 440, but at this level there was barely sufficient for trade requirements, with a good many plain and unfinished cattle forward. The market had a somewhat variable note. From an opening about on a par with late rates, values for steers showed some improvement as the market went along and had gained upwards of about 30s by the close. Heifers sold from a par to a shade firmer, but on the other hand there was a fairly large supply of cows and these tended to be easier. Once again the market was topped by McDonnell Bros. (Totara Flat), with two selling for £4B 17s 6d and three for £47 17s 6d. For the entry of 10 from Totara Flat the average was £46 15s 6d. The estate R. O.
