Indoor Basketball TOP TEAMS TESTED

Good Game By Y-Boys Joint competition leader. University A, was surprisingly forced to the limit against YBoys in the feature match of the Canterbury Men’s Basketball Association's A grade competition. played last evening in the Cowles Memorial Stadium. After mediocre performances in early-season matches. Y-Boys really turned on the pressure in the third round match against University A. going down fighting, 35-22. Although the University A side, which comprises seven members of the Canterbury A training squad, is undoubtedly the strongest team in the competition, the game was never one-sided, and in the early stages Y-Boys even held a slight lead. At half-time, University A led 15-6. Y-Boys, which was runner-up in the competition last season, mainly brought about its downfall through poor rebound play and the frequent attempting of shots from too far out. B. Fifield was a chief offender. However, the side was a greatly improved unit with the inclusion of J. Smith, a new American recruit from “Deep Freeze.” He scored 10 points. W. WardHolmes and W. Smith were the outstanding players for University A, scoring 12 and 11 points respectively. Y.M.C.A., which shares the competition lead with Universtiy A, had considerable difficulty in settling down against University B and for a time it appeared as though It might suffer a surprise defeat. Nevertheless, it recovered very well in the second half to win convincingly by 37 points to 17. R. Bumby (Y.M.C.A.), who was surprisingly left out of the Canterbury training squad after being chosen to play against the Australians in a few weeks'tlme. was the outstanding player. He top scored with 10 points. P Simpson (Y.M.C.A.) scored eight and J. Grocott (University B) scored six. The match between Rex and Burnham was a scrappy affair and never really held the attention of the crowd. The final score of 23-13 to Rex was rather flattering to the winner as there was not a great deal between the two teams. Points in the A grade, as at the end of the fifth round, are: Y.M.C.A. 8. University A 8, Rex 6 Y-Boys 4, University B 2. Wigram 2. Burnham 0. Other results were:— Senior Reserve. Rex 20, Police 19: Teachers’ College 32.
