‘ANDROCLES AND THE LION’

Schools Present Play A bright performance of Shaw’s “Androcles and the Lion” delighted the large audience which attended the presentation by the Shirley Boys’ High School and the Avonside Girls’ High School last evening. The play was produced by Mr D. K. F. Graham and incidental music was played by the Shirley Boys’ High School band. Digby Graham, as the lion, sported and roared convincingly in his mustard-coloured tights and fine head complete with whiskers, bulging eyes, and fangs. Although Michiael Harris as Androcles played his part well, he was to some extent overshadowed by Lavinia (Judith Pate) and Ferrovius (Roger Carson). Judith Pate’s clear voice and expressive face gave her part conviction, and Roger Carson had the powerful voice and physique needed for the strong man he played. Among the minor characters John Turner made a handsome Roman captain and Peter Rosier and Richard Benzieffe delighted the audience as two effeminate Roman patriarchs. Alan Bradshaw was a pompous Caesar, and Colin Eason played the terrified martyr Sipero very well. The scenery, though simple, was effective. All the actors moved with assurance and settled quickly into their parts.

The play will be presented again tonight and tomorrow night.
