Falsehood Faces Tough Opposition

(Specially written tor "The Press")

YONKERS. April 27

The running of last night’s 25,000 dollar Free-for-all, in which Irvin Paul beat most of the horses which will be meeting Falsehood in the three international events at Yonkers Raceway, made it apparent that the New Zealand entry will find it hard to win in the series, which begins next Friday night. Irvin Paul could hardly have been more impressive The first quarter of the race was run in 29 3-ssec and the leaders. Irish Napoleon and Stephen Smith reached the half-mile in 60 2-ssec At that stage Irvin Paul was giving the leaders abou’ 18 to 24 yards It was not until they entered the back straight with about three furlongs to run that Irvin Paul's trainerdriver, Charlie King, sen: him after the leaders. He caught and passed them in little more than a furlong and came home an easy winner in 2m:n Isec. after running his last half-mile in less than a minute.

A wiry. six-year-old gelded son of Gene Abbe Irvin Paul has now won more than 320.000 dollars It was with obvious pride that King. a good - natured quietly-spoken man. gave New Zealanders the opportunity to have a good look at Irvin Paul in his box the other morning Irvin Paul stands over a lot of ground and has, an effortless pacing style He can pace a mile brilliantly but is also a grand stayer—as he proved tn the two-mile Cnampionship Pace last year when he won in 4min Bsec Changed Subject That time, incidentally, is claimed here as a world record. The reaction of the Americans when told that Johnny Globe had broken 4min Bsec f - two miles was interesting. They immediately claimed ‘hat their record was for a half-mile track When told that Johnny Globe’s two-mile record was from a standing start and a handicap of 48 yards they quickly changed the subject. ’ Irvin Paul. by the way has now won four times and been second once from five starts this season. In last

night’s event he beat Henry T. Adios, which started from the difficult No. 8 barrier position.

Henry T Adios, a fiveyear- oid entire by Adios. has won more than 420,000 dollars. His finishing run last night was impressive, bfit he did not, at any stage, look like challenging the winner. Third placing in the free-for-all was filled by the former Australian pacer, Apmat, which is now’ trained by BillyHaughton, one of the top trainers in America. Apmat, although a 10-year-old and perhaps a little past his best, finished on in fine style.

The unlucky runner was Stephan Smith, a seven-year-old full brother to Irvin Paul. The brothers, which have won more than half a million dollars between them, may have fought out the finish last night if Stephan Smith, which gave away the lead after half a mile, had been able to get a run near the end. Third Start Royal Rick and Mighty Tde were the other two contestants in last night’s event that will be racing against Falsehood. ’ Royal Rick, which ran fourth, should improve as it was only his third start for the season. Mighty Tide, a five-year-old Hoot Meat horse which had won _ his last start in 2min 0 1-osec, failed to go away from the mobile barrier. He had done it before, and received a hostile reception when he returned. The other contestant in the ’ international series will be either James Scott or Patchwork. There is some doubt about James Scott, which has apparently been sore, and Yonkers officials hope that Patchwork will be a suitable replacement if he is unable to start. Patchwork ran a creditable fifth the other night at her first start for the season. With this field of top horses the 50.000-dollar International Pace should be a great race* The New Zealand entry. Falsehood. however, will start with the handicap of having been unable to race before the series. It is now two months since Falsehood raced and he had a rough trip out here. It can only be hope<k that be races as well as he looks.
