JUNGLE GYM BANNED

Wainoni School Equipment

Children at the Wainoni School have been forbidden to use playground equipment such as the jungle gym and Taranaki ladder until further notice. The headmaster (Mr R M. Stevens) refused to say why the instruction had been issued. The chairman of the school committee (Mr K. F Norrie) also declined to comment. but confirmed that use of the equipment had been prohibited for a week. A Standard HI girl' at the school claimed her teacher had told the class the pupils were not allowed to use the equipment because the school committee considered it to be unsafe said the girl's father. Mr G. J. Billene. About two months ago. another of Mr BiUens's daughters. .Judith broke an arm in a fall from the jungle gym.

Mr Billens said the jungle gym from which Judith fell was about 9ft high. He said he was concerned at children suffering permanent injury in falls from the equipment. Use of the equipment was supervised, he said. He believed that the equipment had been inspected by the headmaster and three other men on Tuesday. His other daughter had told him that a notice instructing the children not to use the equipment had been sent to each class yesterday.
