Double-Banking

Sir—Perhaps once again one may call attention to the risks run when children carry deck cargo, in the shape of a passenger, on a bicycle; as witness the recent accident when two boys sharing a bicycle down Dyers Pass road, took a nasty toss because, apparently, one of them got a foot mixed up with the front wheel. Actually, there is very good reason for believing that the practice could, in many instances, be held' to contravene the Traffic Regulations; but what a horrible thought. Far better for all concerned would be dissuasive action, especially from authoritative quarters. Traffic officers, it is understood, devote quite a lot of time to indoctrinating children with the principles of road safety; but this particular aspect of it seems to have escaped notice. Anyway, didn’t the Mayor himself say the other day that he looked to the traffic department “to try to prevent the breaking of the laws”?—Yours, etc., M.T. May 1, 1963.
