New Rules Sought
A further move to change the rules of play for the Wilding Shield and Nunneley Casket interprovincial lawn tennis trophies has been made by the Wanganui association. At the annual meeting of the council of the New Zealand association on May 1, the Wanganui association will move: "That the rules for the Wilding Shield and Nunneiey Casket be waived for next season, and that the round-robin rules as drafted by the management committee in 1962 be adopted for the conduct of these competitions for next season.” Canterbury all but succeeded in getting the system changed. After considering for some years that the trophies, played for on the system of challenges to the holders, had lost a great deal of inter-
est because only a few associations were taking part, Canterbury made the suggestion of playing them under a system similar to the Freyberg Rose Bowl golf tournament to the annual meeting in 1961, and gained support. The council adopted the suggestion and instructed the management committee to prepare amendments to the rules for the next annual meeting. But the Auckland association, the holder of both trophies in most years for more than a decade, moved that the motion to amend the rules be rescinded. At the annual meeting Wanganui attempted to have the amended rules discussed before the Auckland motion but failed and the Auckland motion was carried. Wanganui will now have another try and it should gain support at least from Canterbury.
