Unexpected Assistance
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 26. The pumping of floodwaters from Lake Okareka into Lake Tarawera, which began today, went so well that workmen stopped the pump, fearing something was wrong. Joints in the pipes screamed like fire engines because the suction was so great. The workmen were so startled at seeing the pressure in the pump falling away to zero that they suspected a blockage. But all was well Water running from the pipeline leading Into Lake Tarawera had created a siphoning effect which greatly lightened the load on the pump.
