Not Warlike

The sound of explosions in Pegasus Bay, from the Waimakariri river to North New Brighton was not from gunfire to commemorate the Anzac landing on Gallipoli. The explosions were from sonic shots made from a launch off-shore. The shots were fired by an oil exploration company to test the structure of the earth’s crust inland. £lOO Legacies Provisions for legacies of £lOO each to the Presbyterian Church Property Trustees and to the New Zealand Alliance was made under the will of Mr Donald Campbell Morrison, probate of which was granted to the Public Trustee earlier this year. Cyclists Praised A member of the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee has congratulated Christchurch cyclists on their use of road lanes. Mr N. Wright told the committee's meeting on Wednesday evening that cyclists were educating motorists in the use of lanes. At intersections cyclists pushed the cars that wanted to go left right over to the left lane where they should be. Mr Wright said he had noticed this particularly with Teachers’ College students in Bealey avenue on their way to the college. Fish Supplies Fish supplies were short in Christchurch on Wednesday, but there was a greater variety available. Groper and soles were scarce. Prices a pound were: tarakihi 4s, cod 3s, ling 2s 6d, gurnard 2s 3d. A limited quantity of oysters was available. Army Volunteers Applications by South Island men for service in the 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, totalled 89 up to noon on Wednesday. It was a day less than a month since the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) officially launched the battalion’s recruiting campaign. Railways Centenary Officials of the Railways Department are working out plans for the celebration of the centenary of the opening of the railways system. The first steam train ran from Christchurch to Ferrymead on December 1, 1863. Details for the celebrations had not yet been made final, but were expected to be announced soon, an official of the department said yesterday.— (F.0.0.R.) Drop In Salary Shooting, fishing and the lack of radioactivity in New Zealand could have been the reason that an American pig expert earning the equivalent of £5OOO a year, applied for the position of director of pig improvement in New Zealand for an annual income of £1750. This was the opinion of members of the Wellington District Pig Council when they were discussing the appointment of a director of pig improvement. The chairman (Mr E. W. Harrison) said there had been three applications from New Zealand, 30 from the United Kingdom and 12 from America.—(PA.) ' Drivers’ Course A further driver refresher course will be held in Christchurch on May 15. It will be held in the M.E.D. lecture room ait 7.30 p.m., and will be illustrated with slides and films. There will be an opportunity for questions. The course, which is organised by the traffic department of the Christchurch City Council, is open to members of the public. Those wishing to attend are asked to ring 77-840 extension 23, and leave their names, or to leave their names at the driving licence counter in the City Council chambers. Proud Parents A bison calf was bom at the Auckland Zoo yesterday to Candy a bison obtained a few years ago from the Wellington Zoo. The calf became wedged against the base of the shed where it first saw the light of day, and had to be released by keepers Half an hour later it was up on its feet and walking wobbly-legged around the rocky run. A proud mother shepherded her first calf with care, while his burly sire nudged aside the notoriously inquisitive llamas who share the run.—(PA.)
