OLD WRECK FOUND
May Be Dutch Treasure Ship (N.ZJP^A.-Reuter—Copyright) PERTH (Western Australia), April 21. Divers have gone to a point 60 miles north of Perth on the Western Australian coast in hopes that an old wreck located on a reef six miles off-shore might turn out to be a Dutch treasure ship, the Gilt Dragon. Spearfishermen found the wreck a week ago and recovered a four-foot elephant tusk and about a dozen ballast bricks. The area where they were fishing is usually inaccessible, but freak conditions enabled them to anchor in calm, clear water seaward of the reef. Dr. Philip Playford, a Perth geologist said yesterday there was a chance the grave of the Gilt Dragon mayhave been found, but the wreck could be that of one of several Dutch vessels which disappeared centuries ago on voyages to Java. The Gilt Dragon went down on the night of April 27, 1056, while carrying eight boxes containing 78.600 guilders—today worth several hundred thousand pounds, the amount depending on wheither the coins were gold or silver.
