GALAPAGOS ERUPTION
Villagers Flee Lava (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) GUAYAQUIL (Ecuador), April 16. A volcano is erupting violently on Isabela Island in the Galapagos, 600 miles west of Ecuador, radio messages said yesterday. No casualties were reported.
The messages said Chingo volcano, inactive for years, had begun to throw out lava and ash on Saturday.
Panic-striken inhabitants of the nearest village, Santo Tomas, have fled. The islands, which belong to Ecuador, are a popular tourist spot. Their estimated population is 1900. Streams of lava crawled down the slopes behind the fleeing villagers. The reports said inhabitants were gathering in the main port of Villamil.
The eruption continued today British United Press in a dispatch from Quito, Ecuador, said the eruption had come unexpectedly. Isabela, the largest island in the archipelago, used to be a penal colony. The island now is used largely for cattle-raising.
