APPOINTMENT OF REFEREES

Canterbury Men Preferred

Last season Canterbury' referees had most New Zealand refereeing appointments of any province, 31 against Wellington’s 29 and Auckland’s 24. This was reported by Mr L. S. Kirk (referees’ delegate) at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening.

Mr Kirk said that three rules had received clarification from the International Board. Shoulder pads of the harness type, no matter what they were made of, were now illegal; a penalty kick could now be disallowed if the kicker wasted time; and where there was a scrummage near the line and the defending scrum was pushed back over the line and forced the ball it was a drop out 25 and not a five yard scrum.
