Resumption On Saturday
The South Island tennis championships being held in conjunction with the annual Canterbury Easter tournament will be continued and. it is hoped, completed next Saturday. Taking into account the rain covering the courts and advice from the weather office that more showers were likely during the day, the tournament manager (Mr A. C. Felton) decided before 9 a.m. yesterday there should be no play for the day. He made the decision early to prevent players having to stand arounr’ waiting as they had to on Monday. This may mean some visiting players still in the tournament will not be able to continue but it is essential to find titleholders at least in the open singles sections so that national records are not interrupted. As it happens there is no visiting play:r still in the men’s singles. W. Thom, B. J. Aldridge, M. Agar, R. McCutcheon and G. Ford all being from Christchurch. The women’s singles has reached the final between Miss S. Rich, of Christchurch, and last year’s Easter singles winner. Miss S. Field, of Dunedin. Miss Field has indicated that she will be available next Saturday. The under 19 singles sections are now also confined to Christchurch players but open and under 19 doubles and under 17 singles still have visiting players.. The top seeds in the under 17 singles, C. Hunt (boys’) and M. Sewell (girls’) are from Nelson and Geraldine respectively. Mr Felton said play could also be held on the Sunday if it was found necessary.
