FERNS OF THE PACIFIC

A University of Canterbury botanist, Mr G. Brownlie, is doing experimental work cm the ferns of NewZealand and Pacific islands to the north, including the next biggest one, New Caledonia some 1000 miles away. But he has found that the basic groundwork of classification and naming has no: been done for New' Caledonia’s many ferns. He will have to do that first, before any more advanced studies Mr Brownlie, senior lecturer in botany at the university, plans to Leave for New Caledonia on a collecting expedition on May 17 -Already he has practically completed his experimental work on couniting the chromosomes of New Zealand ferne —a study which reveals the relationship of one fern to another—and now he is to produce a comprehensive flora of New Caledonia's fems.
He said that there were certain relationships between the flora of New Caledonie and New Zealand. Some of the ferns there w’ere exactly the same as those in NewZealand. His visit to New Caledonia plus a short visit to Fiji, wifi be made under a university research grant.
