EASTER DAY IN ALABAMA

Police Patrol Near Churches

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BIRMINGHAM (Alabama),

„ , April 14. Small groups of negroes attended Easter Day services at some white Birmingham churches today in the twelfth day of racial protests here, but others were turned away, United Press International reported.

“You cannot enter,” an usher at one church told three young negroes. “This church was built by white people and white people worship here.”

In at least two churches, the young negroes were admitted and took part in the Easter services.

Thres others were known to have refused entrance to the negroes.

There were no disturbances. Police patrolled the area around the churches. The Rev. Martin Luther King, who has led racial demonstrations here, was in gaol on charges stemming from a protest march on the business district on Fridav. More than 200 arrests have been made in the series of protests against racial segregation since they started on April 3.
