BEDSTEAD AS BOAT
French Customs Baffled (N.Z.P.A .-Reuter —Copyrigh f) CALAIS. April 14 The only double bedsrtead ever to be used as a boat to cross the English Channel is up for sale An English university student. Donald Kidd, aged 18. said: ’Til take five bob for it like a shot I might even consider paying someone to take it away ” Kidd and Keith McKenna, aged 19. sailed to France yesterday on their bedstead in an all-day crossing It was buoyed up by two 46-gallon oil drums and driven by a 5 h,p outboard motor Now the students do not know what to do with it Worse still the French Customs authorities do not know what to do with It either “I am battling with red tape." Kidd said “It seems they want me to take it away, or get an import licence"
The crossing followed a challenge to Liverpool University from Manchester and Sheffield University students Kidd said the bedstead was ‘‘scientifically designed and tested, and all worked out mathematically. Now all we want is to get rid of it.”
