ROYAL TOUR COST

The cost of the recent Royal tour to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, borne by the British Government, was about £lOO,OOO the Commonwealth Relations Secretary (Mr Duncan Sandys) told the House ot Commons. He said he had no information about expenditure incurred by other Governments concerned. Mr Sandys, in a written reply, was answering a question by the Labour member, Mr J. P. W. Mallalieu, on the amount the British Government was bearing.
“I am sure the House would wish me to take this opportunity to emphasise the immense value of the Commonwealth tours which the Queen and Prince Philip have carried out with such supreme success,” Mr Sandys said. “These personal visits by the Sovereign help in a unique way to strengthen the bonds of niutual affection and fellowship between the peoples of the Commonwealth.”
(The cost of the tour of New Zealand was estimated by Xhe Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) as £250,000.)
