RACING GOLD VIEW MAY BE HARD TO BEAT
. 82000 Riccarton Sprint Today Poet's Pride’s second to the galloping phenomenon Final Command at Ellerslie on Saturday could, indirectly, point to a win for Gold View in the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton today.
Poet’s Pride beat some top milers in the Auckland club’s Easter Handicap, and beat most of them more easily than he beat Gold View atTrentham last month. Poet’s Pride and Gold View were the first two home in the Suburban Handicap of seven furlongs on the second day of the Wellington autumn meeting.
Gold View carried 8-0. and has 8-4 today. But she carried 8-13 when she easily won the open sprint at the Banks Peninsula meeting at Riccarton on March 9.
Gold View gave Yankinville 191 b and beat him by tnree and a half lengths at Riccarton. Today, Gold View is weighted to give Yankinville 171 b, but G. W. Mein will hardly manage to ride Yankinville at 7-1 or within slb of that weight. On weights alone, then. Gold View should beat Yankinville again. But there ts every good reason to expect a better run from Yankinville on a firmer track, which is pretty well certain today Trentham form, and it is
usually the best form, also points to sound runs from Funny Story Warfare. Zinder. and Magician today. Funny Story and Warfare which are in the Great Easter, had placed form at the Wellington autumn meeting. So did Magician, which was perhaps unlucky not to beat Gold Chat in the Wakefield Challenge Stakes Magician will not start at such inviting odds in the Champagne Stakes today. Zinder and Hot Foot were the only two winners for the South Island at the Wellington meeting. Zinder easily won the New Zealand St Leger and Hot Foot improved a nearly faultless record with a sound
win against some smart back milers On those runs Zinder (Great Autumn Handicap) and Hot Foot (Warstep Stakes) will probably be firm favourites today. Zinder is owned by Mr D. W. J. Gould and trained at Riccarton by J. C Tomkinson.
Tlis combination has not managed to win one of the major Easter races at Riccarton. but Hot Foot’s Wingatui owner-trainer, D P Wilson, figures prominently in the records of the Great Easter and Great Autumn.
Wilson, who also prepares Warfare, the Great Autumn top-weight Llanmai. and the high-weight candidate Cluny Bill, owned and trained The Hob. which won both the Great Easter and Great Autumn. Clinker was another to win the Great Easter in his colours, and The Hob was only one of four horses he has prepared to win the Great Autumn. The others were Black Duke, Frances and First In
