Obituary MR D. J. McBEATH
(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU. April 14. ' Mr Daniel Jason Mcßeath. a former New Zealand representative cricketer, Canterbury provincial golfer, and well-known South Canterbury businessman, died suddenly in Timaru on Saturday. He was 08. At the time of bis death be was president of the Timaru Golf Club, president of the Town and Country Club, Timaru. and a director of the Timaru motor retail firm of Horwell, Osborn. Mcßeath. Ltd A left-arm medium-fast bowler, Mr Mcßeath took 170 wickets in first-class matches between 1917 and 1927 while playing for New Zealand and representing Otago, Canterbury and Southland. His average was 20.8. He claimed 14 wickets while touring with New Zealand in Australia.
He was one of the few players who have taken 15 wickets in a Plunket Shield match. He did this while playing for Canterbury against Auckland in 1918-19. In the same match he took nine wickets in one innings. A keen golfer, Mr Mcßeath was a former senior champion of the Timaru club and represented his province. He was also a Canterbury snooker champion. After joining the Timaru motor firm in 1935 as a director, Mr Mcßeath became prominent in motor trade affairs. He was Dominion president of the Retail Motor Trade Association and president of the South Canterbury branch of the association. The South Canterbury Returned Services' Association also claimed some of his time and he was a former president. A founder member of the Town and Country Club, he was closely associated with the erection of the club’s new £30,000 premises in Timaru last year. Mr Mcßeath was born at Kimberley. North Canterbury, in 1897. He is survived by three daughters and a son, Patsy (Mrs W Hart-Smith. Australia*, Frances (Mrs N. B. Harvey. Auckland), Nancy (Mrs B. H. Allnutt, Timaru), and Donald, of Timaru.
MR L. L. CORDERY
Mr Lionel Lingwood Cordery, who was associated with several Christchurch companies for many years as a. director, died at his home in Papanui road yesterday morning. Mr Cordery was 86
For more than 64 years, Mr Cordery was associated with P and D. Duncan, Ltd., implement manufacturers and engineers, Tuam street, Christchurch. He retired as managing director in 1948. after 58 years with the company. but remained governing director for another six or seven years. He joined the firm on September 1, 1890. but nine years later left to become secretary to Booth Macdonald and Company Two years later he returned to P. and D. Duncan as office supervisor. In 1905 he was appointed secretary and accountant and four years later he and Mr James Keir were appointed co-managing directors.
In June, 1932. Mr Keir retired and Mr Cordery became the sole managing director. On the death of Dr. J. F. Duncan in 1943 he became also chairman of directors.
Mr Cordery was also chairman of directors of Blackwell Motors, Ltd., and was a director at the time of his death. He was also a director of T Armstrong and Company. Ltd., at the time of his death.
Last year Mr Cordeiy retired from being a director of Ashby Bergh and Company, Ltd.
For approximately 46 years he was auditor to Thomas Borthwick and Sons (Australasia). Ltd. He served also on the University Grants Committee for two or three years.
Mr Cordery was a member and a past master of the Civic Masonic Lodge. He is survived by two sons. Mr E. L. Cordery and Dr. L. H Cordery. three grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
PROFESSOR JAMES RUTHERFORD

AUCKLAND, April 14. Professor James Rutherford. professor of history at Auckland University and a historical writer, died suddenly in Auckland on Wednesday He was 57. He was appointed to the professorial chair in Auckland at the age of 28.
Professor Rutherford sat on the St. John's College Trust Board and the King's College Board of Governors. He served as a captain in the 3rd New Zealand division in the Pacific during the Second World War. Professor Rutherford had numerous publications to his credit, including his latest study of Sir George Grey—a study in colonial government This was well received throughout the world and has entered its second edition. He is survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter and three grandchildren
