Easter Services In Local Churches

Services with a special emphasis on the crucifixion and resurre tion of Christ were held in most Christchurch churches on Good Friday and Easter Day Some denominatiot held combined services and there was a general emphasis on the welcome of non-church members to services

On Good Friday the Christchurch Cathedral held a three-hour devotion taken by the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev W A Pvatt) from noon to 3 p.m Passion music wa sung by the Cathedra) Choir in the evening The usual two services were held at the Christchurch Cathedral yesterdav The preachers were the Dean in the morning and the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev A K Warren) in the evening

At the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament the Roman Catholic Holy Week ceremonies began on Thursday with a Solemn Pontifical Mass celebrated by the Bishop (the Most Rev E. M Joyce). at which were blessed the holy oils used in the administration of the sacraments during the

year. On Thursday evening was held a Solemn Mass commemorating the institution of the Most Blessed Eucharist

On Good Friday. Bishop Joyce preached at the ceremony in honour of the Passion and the Death of Christ In the evening, the Way of the Cross was made in the Cathedral The Easter Vigil Mass began in the Cathedral at 11 p.m on Saturday, pieceded by the blessing of thEaster Fire ard the Easter Water. Masses were celebrated vesterday from 6 a.m

A dawn service was held at 7 a.m yesterday in Victoria square by the Salvation Army, the Methodts’ Central Mission and ’he Dur ham Street Methodist Church The Salvation Armv band played

A combined service was also held at 11 a m on Good Friday at the Trinity Congregational hutch Those taking part included th* Baptist. Methodist. Congregational and Presbyterian Churches six’ the Church of Christ The preacher was the Rev W S Dawson, and the service was conducted by the Rev. S. C. Francis and the Rev. D. J. Inglis.
