1914 Record Broken In Universities Sports

WELLINGTON, April 14.

A 49-year-old record for the men’s 100 yards was broken by the Canterbury sprinter, D. W. McKenzie, when the New Zealand Universities Easter sports tournament was continued in Wellington on Saturday. McKenzie’s time of 9.9 sec in his heat lowered by one-tenth of a second the record held jointly by six athletes and first established in 1914.

The athletics section of the tournament yielded two more records, and three were broken in the swimming titles.

In the unofficial points table last night, Victoria held a narrow lead over Otago and Canterbury.

The unofficial points were: Victoria 18. Otago 16. Canterbury 15, Auckland 5. Massey 2, Lincoln 0. Canterbury competitors were leading in both the cricket and rowing sections, and finished second in the shooting competition. Swimming Three records fell in the first session of the swimming tournament P. Hatch, of Auckland, recorded 60.3 sec for the 110yds freestyle, beating his own time of 62.1 sec set in 1960. In the 440 yards freestyle, B Crowder (Victoria) took 10.8 sec off the record set in Auckland last year, with 4min 58sec, while Miss J.
