JERUSALEM. April 14
Thousands of Christian pilgrims ushered in Easter morning with a prayerful vigil for the sunrise start of reverent celebrations honouring a risen Christ. In dozens of churches within Jerusalem's ancient walls worshippers of more than 100 Christian sects knelt for services commemorating Christ’s resurrection almost 2000 vears ago
For about 15.000 Greek Orthodox. Armenian. Coptic and Syrian faithful, the celebration of the triumph of life over death began on Holy Saturday at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
An estimated 25.000 pilgrims crowded the Holy City to worship at the Mount of Olives and in churches In Rome, the bells of the city’s 500 churches pealed joyously at midnight to welcome tidings of Christ’s rising from the dead
The booming of the big bells at St Peter’s marked the end of Easter vigil rites in the Basilica and in the other churches.
