College To Buy Telescope The Christchurch Technical College board ot management has approved the purchase of a telescope and a recording instrument to assist a member of the college’s teaching staff, Mr T. F. Mackrell, in bis observations of the sun. Mr Mackrell will soon begin an 18-month programme in connexion with the International Year of the Quiet Sun. to be observed this year and next. Approval was received from the Education Department for the establishment of a course for South Island apprentice; in painting and decorating. The principal (Mr D. W. Lyall) told the board that the classes had formerly been held in Wellington, but it dnas hoped that a course could be begun in Christchurch this year. The department also approved a painting and decorating class for Maori apprentices. The Department of Maori Affairs suggested that this be started at the Christchurch Technical College in 1964, and the apprenticeship committee will be asked to consider this suggestion.

Enrolments in evening classes at the college at March 31 were 2770, compared with 2610 ait the same time last year, reported Mr Lyall.
