Three Senior Appointments (NZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON. April 9. Three senior appointments tn overseas posts were announced today by the Prime Minister <Mr Holyoake). The present New Zealand Commissioner in Singapore •Mr R H. Wade) is to succeed Mr C. M. Bennett as High Commissioner to the Federation of Malaya; Mr R. L G. Challis. Consul-General in San Francisco, has been appointed High Commissioner in Singapore, and Mr M. P. Chapman, who is at present counsellor at the High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, is to be Consul-General in San Francisco.
Mr Holyoake said that Mr Wade, who has been Commiss.oner in Singapore since May, 1962. already had an intimate knowledge of Asia. He had held posts in New Delhi and Ceylon and had travelled widely in South and South-east Asia. Mr Challis, who had held h.s present appointment in San Francisco since 1960. would bring to his duties in Singapore valuable experience and knowledge acquired during previous service in Asia, said Mr Holyoake. He had been deputy liaison officer for U.N.R.R.A. with the Chinese Government in Nanking in the immediate post-war years and had then served in New Zealand mis- » ons in Tokyo, Bangkok and New Delhi.
Mr Holyoake paid a warm tribute to the manner in which Mr Bennett carried out his assignment in Malaya. "Mr Bennett is a worthy member of a famous NewZealand family.” he said, "and during the last four years he has made a notable contribution to the development of New Zealand’s relat.ons with the Federation of Malaya.”
