SHIFT WORK PROPOSAL
Dependence On Labour
(NX. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 9. An Associated Chambers of Commerce proposal for shift work in all industries would have to be viewed in the light of availability of labour, the president of the Federation of Labour, Mr F. PWalsh, said today. The Associated Chambers conference in Rotorua last week decided to ask the Government to adopt the proposal in order to reduce production costs.
The remit, sponsored by Mr W. G V. Fernie (Canterbury) said the proposal would allow improved use of the industrial capacity of New Zealand. Machines being used at 25 per cent, of their potential could be brought into 50 per cent, use and this would mean an increase in turnover and more rapid replacement of machinery. Mr Walsh said it was all very fine to make such suggestions but apparently the chambers had not given serious thought to the availability of labour. “There are just not sufficient skilled tradesmen in the country to work shifts."
He said the Federation of Labour had not been asked to consider the question and had not set policy on shift work as envisaged by the Associated Chambers.
